1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup chocolate chips

1 cup brownie batter (from below)

1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

For the Brownie Batter:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Prepare the Brownie Batter: In a medium saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup of unsalted butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

    Add the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder to the mixture and stir until just combined. Set the brownie batter aside.

      Make the Cookie Dough: In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.

        In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

          Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix until incorporated. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

            Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using) into the cookie dough.

              Assemble the Brookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x9 inch baking pan with parchment paper.

                Scoop spoonfuls of cookie dough into the pan, flattening them slightly. Then, spoon dollops of the brownie batter on top of the cookie dough, ensuring it is evenly distributed.

                  Using a knife, swirl the brownie batter into the cookie dough to create a marbled effect.

                    Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the edges are set and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

                      Allow to cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
